The Foundation of Wat Sakeow was created in 1942 by Luang Por Chabap, locally known as Pra Kru Khantayapiwat, responsible of the Wat Sakeo.
At that time there were 10 children, today there are around 1500, who come from all over Thailand. The children are aged between 6 – 18. They are orphans, or from families too poor to take care of them or from divorced parents. From time to time babies are abandoned at the Wat.
In order to feed all these children, the orphanage of Wat Sakeo needs 8 sacs of rice and 17.000 Baht a day. Since the economic crisis in 1997, the donations are not as generous as they used to be and the Wat has more difficulties to run this operation. These children need to be clothed, fed and taken care of when sick.
The Thai Government has built 2 big schools nearby and pays for the teachers. The Wat takes care of the rest. Very few of the staff of the orphanage are given a salary. The older boys and girls from 15 – 18 are looking after the younger ones and instead of a salary they receive a professional training e.g. as mechanics or Likay actors. Only if the children have a family or if some of the selected factories are giving them work, can they leave the Wat.
Some of the village women give a hand with the cooking.
No children are up for adoption. The people in charge believe that if the children receive a proper education, they will be able to be integrated into the Thai society and become good citizens.
In order to make all this possible, all donations are welcome: food, toiletries, books, pencils etc. etc. You can also invite the children for a meal, or participate in some of the ongoing projects.
